This is by far the most preventable cause of sun damage and prematurely aged skin. Not only should you get in the habit of wearing an SPF lotion (at least SPF 30), you should also avoid being directly in the sun between the high-intensity hours of about 10 am – 4 pm, when the sun’s rays can do the most damage. The most dangerous consequence of excessive UV exposure is skin cancer, but it also decreases the skin’s elasticity and may even cause uneven pigmentation.

Don’t smoke

Smoking is another highly preventable cause of wrinkles and fine lines, and like sun damage also reduces the skin’s natural elasticity. And because of the repetitive facial expressions involved in smoking a cigarette, such as pursing the lips in order to inhale, causes deeper-set wrinkles around the mouth and nose.

Read the labels

It can be frustrating trying to choose moisturizer, toner, eye cream, or other skin products when there are literally thousands of brands clamoring for your attention in the drugstore aisles. For aging skin, products that contain retinol are your best bet for firming up and smoothing your face. For dry skin, sun damage, or clogged pores, start a daily AHA/BHA routine: alpha hydroxy acid lotion, and beta hydroxy acid exfoliant work brilliantly together and are relatively easy to locate.

Be gentle around your eyes
