Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day 2014

Breast Reconstruction: Most Commonly Performed on Survivors of Breast Cancer

Some people view cosmetic surgery as being purely superficial, but it has helped millions of people regain their confidence and improve their quality of life. One important way it has done this is through breast reconstruction.

Breast reconstruction is achieved through several techniques designed to restore the normal shape, appearance, and size of the original breast following a mastectomy. The procedure is most commonly performed on survivors of breast cancer.

Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day

Helping a patient’s self-esteem and body image

Over 200,000 cases of breast cancer involving invasive surgery are diagnosed in women every year in the US. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, seconded only by lung cancer. And for survivors, a mastectomy removing part or all of the breast tissue can be a traumatic and demoralizing experience

Through breast reconstruction, we are able to help these patients by reconstructing the breast mound to closely resemble the appearance of the original breast. And while a reconstructed breast will not have the same sensation and feel of the breast it replaces, breast reconstruction goes a long way to helping a patient’s self-esteem and body image.

Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day, or BRA Day as it’s lovingly referred to, was launched in 2011 by Dr. Mitchell Brown, a Toronto-based plastic surgeon. The day, which falls in the middle of Breast Cancer Awareness month, was designed to promote education and awareness of not just breast cancer, but of the options available to survivors. Since its founding, more than 30 countries around the world have begun participating. The day’s national coordinator Willow holds numerous events and fundraisers to support the cause. To find out more about BRA Day, as well as information on local events and how to support the organization, visit the official website.
