More Consumers Turning to Cosmetic Treatment in 2016

Is your face selfie-ready? A growing level of consumer engagement on various social media platforms may have started a new trend in cosmetic procedures. The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery reports that in 2015, 64% of facial plastic surgeons saw an increase in both invasive and noninvasive treatments for patients under age 30. 82% of surgeons also reported that their patients’ decisions were influenced by celebrities, a growing number of whom are using social media to chronicle their latest cosmetic treatments.

The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery recently published their 2015 Consumer Survey on dermatological procedures. Researchers found that for patients, the 3 most important reasons to have cosmetic treatments were: looking younger/better for their age, appearing more attractive, and feeling more confident. Wrinkle relaxers were rated the highest in patient satisfaction, followed by injectable dermal fillers. The ASDS study also reported the following:

The two most important factors in influencing the selection of a practitioner:

  • The specialty in which the physician is board-certified: 55%
  • The price of the procedure: 45%

Today, consumers are considering having these procedures the most:

  • Skin tightening/wrinkle treatments (ultrasound, laser, or radiofrequency): 66%
  • Laser hair removal: 55%
  • Microdermabrasion: 53%
  • Laser and light-based treatments for skin tone, scars, and redness: 51%

Before receiving cosmetic procedures, patients were most bothered by:

  • Excess weight on any part of the body: 88%
  • Lines and wrinkles on the forehead (56%), between the eyebrows (55%), around the cheeks and mouth (64%), and around the eyes (69%)
  • Sagging facial skin: 67%
  • Skin texture and discoloration: 72%

Laser tattoo removal is another trending treatment: According to market research firm IBISWorld, the laser tattoo removal industry has grown 440% in the past 10 years, and spending is projected to reach $83.2 million by 2018.
