Natural Home Remedies for Diabetes

Our choices in life can have a great impact on our health. The healthier our life choices, the greater our chances of living a healthy, longer, and higher quality life.  One common ailment can at times and in certain cases be prevented with healthier choices – diabetes.

Nowadays diabetes has become a common health problem. From children to adults, people of all ages are affected by this disease – and the growing childhood obesity epidemic will pose a massive healthcare burden in the coming years.

What is Diabetes?

Also known as diabetes mellitus, the condition is a disorder of the metabolism. The people who suffer from the condition have a high blood glucose level, which is also called hyperglycemia. The condition develops when the body is unable to either produce enough insulin or use it efficiently. The low levels of insulin means the level of sugar in the blood keeps building up instead of being absorbed by the cells.

This increased level of sugar in blood can damage blood vessels and nerves. Diabetes can further cause problems such as cardiovascular diseases, kidney problems, dental problems, sexual dysfunction, and even amputations. Though there’s no clear indication of the causes of diabetes, health experts believe that genes and environmental factors play a role in its development.

There are two types of diabetes and both have their own set of complications – types I and II. While type I diabetes is often genetic and irreversible, type II diabetes can be reversed with healthy changes.  One thing that both have in common is the natural remedies that have been reported to help manage the condition.

If you or your loved one is suffering from the disease, here are a few natural remedies that can help you in managing the condition and lead a healthy life.

·       Bitter Gourd

One of the most effective remedies is bitter gourd. The bitter vegetable is highly effective in curbing high levels of blood sugar. The iron-rich vegetable is safe to be consumed by anyone. It has a great impact on the glucose metabolism and also helps to stimulate pancreatic insulin secretion. Whether you’re suffering from Type 1 or 2 diabetes, bitter gourd has potential to manage blood sugar level fluctuations. Drink a glass of bitter gourd juice each morning and keep diabetes at bay – in fact, diabetes patients have come off their traditionally prescribed medications with the use of daily bitter gourd.

·       Mango Leaves

Mango is the king of all fruits and its leaves are a great way to manage diabetes. Even research has proven that tender mango leaves are helpful in improving blood lipid profiles and also effective in regulating your sugar levels. All you need to do is soak 10-15 tender mango leaves in a glass of water overnight. In the morning, filter the water and drink it in an empty stomach.

Another way to consume mango leaves is to dry them in shade and grind them to a powder. Eat half teaspoon of the powder twice a day for effective results.

·       Cinnamon

Trials have proved that cinnamon is an effective option to lower blood sugar levels, especially in the case of uncontrolled Type 2 diabetes. The spice contains bioactive components that not only prevent diabetes but also help to fight it. Though effective for diabetes in a controlled amount, too much of cinnamon can be toxic. It can increase the risk of liver damage so make sure you don’t go overboard with this home remedy.

There are several ways you can take cinnamon to control your diabetes.  Mix half teaspoon of cinnamon in a cup of warm water and drink it daily. Another way is to boil some cinnamon sticks in a glass of water and let it steep for 20 minutes. Drink the concoction daily and you’ll be sure to see some amazing results soon.

·       Black Plum

Known for its anti-diabetic properties, black plum contains hydrolysable tannis, ellagic acid, anthocyanins. All of these ingredients are known to lower urine and blood sugar levels considerably. Since the fruit is seasonal, you can dry them up and use them in off-seasons as well. For great results, you can ground up the dried fruit and consume a teaspoon of the powder daily. Even the juice of the fruit is beneficial for people with diabetes. Get some from the nearest supermart but make sure there’s no added sugar in the mix.

·       Okra

The vegetable that most of us know as lady finger, has powerful qualities for fighting diabetes. People who suffer from the condition can definitely benefit by adding it to their daily diet. It is known for polyphenolic molecules that can help reduce blood glucose levels and control diabetes.

Even a 2011 study that was published in the Journal of Pharmacy and BioAllied Sciences found that okra seed and peel powder have antidiabetic and antihyperlipidemic qualities. These are effective in managing your blood sugar levels and giving you a new chance at a healthy life.

Take a few okras and cut off both ends. Prick them several times with a fork and let them soak in a glass of water overnight. In the morning, strain the water and drink it on an empty stomach. You can do this for weeks and soon the positive effects of the practice would become apparent. You can also include the vegetable in your diet for best results.
