A new study has determined what many of us have already known: Minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, including Botox ® and laser/energy device procedures are exceedingly safe and have essentially no risk of serious adverse effects.
The study, performed by Northwestern Medicine ® is the first large, multi-center study of its kind to analyze the rate of adverse effects among tens of thousands of cosmetic procedures performed in the United States by experienced dermatologists.
According to the research, it was found that while side effects such as bruising, redness, or swelling may occur, they are minor and typically go away on their own. These minor adverse effects occurred in less than 1 percent of the patients studied.
The study was led by Murad Alam, MD, a professor of dermatology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Alam, who is also a physician at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, believes the results of the study will provide peace-of-mind for people considering non-invasive cosmetic procedures.
“The message for patients is that if you are thinking of getting one of these procedures, you are not indulging in something drastic or high risk,” Alam said. “The take home is these procedures are very safe and can be mixed and matched to give the individual a significant cosmetic benefit, rather than getting one big cosmetic procedure that might be risky.”
While it’s been a long-standing belief that minimally invasive procedures have posed no serious risks to patients, this is the first study that provides adequate proof. Previous studies have been small, typically involving a single physician looking at their own data.
The Northwestern study used results from 20,399 procedures performed by 23 board-certified dermatologists located at 8 different cosmetic centers around the country.
Many of us have known that minimally-invasive and non-invasive cosmetic procedures are a safe option for patients, but having legitimate research to back these beliefs is important. Above all else, the purpose of cosmetic procedures is to help patients feel better about themselves and their appearance. Anxiety about the risks involved with cosmetic procedures is natural, but many people have allowed those fears to deter them. With this new evidence, many more patients will be able to confidently choose cosmetic treatments as an option.
